Travel with us
I knew I didn’t want “do Nepal”, and I knew that volunteering somewhere for two weeks was more for my benefit than anyone else…I wanted something meaningful and different. The Women Empowering Women trip gave me the chance to travel with a purpose. I could see Nepal, have fun, learn, connect and make a genuine contribution to activities that are community-led and really matter..

A tour with a difference
The Women Empowering Women (WEW) trip evolved from the Colourful Journey that Wendy Moore and Bishnu Rai (from Himalayan Sunrise Treks and Tours) ran from 2011. The early versions of the journey were quite intrepid. People felt a deep sense of connection and engagement in the places they visited. In 2018, Clare Bartram from Project Didi Australia stepped in to lead one of our groups when Wendy became unavailable due to illness. This resulted in the collaboration that produced the Women Empowering Women tours, starting in 2024. The spirit of the original trips remains and they now explicitly fundraise for Samunnat Nepal and Project Didi. Both groups are united in supporting women who drive change in their communities. Together, we think we’ve created the journey of a lifetime…a uniquely different experience that provides an opportunity for real connection, understanding things better and having a really good time.
what happens on a WEW journey?
For just over two weeks, travellers get the chance to see a different part of Nepal to that which most tourists see. You will see fabulous views and explore picturesque villages but you also get off the beaten track. You will meet people from local organisations who are working for change. You see artisans at work. You stay in fancy hotels providing employment to young locals. AND…you stay with local villagers using homestay to share their culture and lifestyle.
You will have cooking lessons and opportunities to meet the frontline workers in the organisations you have raised funds to support.
You watch weavers at work and see how Nepal’s famous khukri knives are made. You get hands on experience of Nepali lokta paper production and enjoy meals with real families!
This is not a trek and you won’t get much higher than Mt. Kosciuszko…but a little bit of walking is involved. We walk through villages and up to waterfalls and through temples and maybe even to do a bit of shopping!
You travel with very experienced guides. Wendy Moore and Bishnu Rai met 30 years ago. Bishnu lives in Nepal and Wendy lived there for 4 years. She continues to travel to Nepal to Samunnat Nepal twice a year.
