Fair Trade

Samunnat Inc. is committed to the principles of Fair Trade. The World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) has agreed on Ten Principles of Fair Trade and we take these as our benchmark . In partnership with Samunnat Nepal, we are working to improve the way that we follow these principles.

The principles are listed below with a summary statement that is most relevant to the Samunnat project

Principle One: Creating Opportunities for Economically Disadvantaged Producers

Our organisation is working to reduce poverty and help people become self-sufficient

Principle Two: Transparency and Accountability

The management of our organisation is honest and clear. We treat our employees, partners and customers with respect. We involve our employees in making decisions.

Principle Three: Fair Trading Practices

The organisation trades with concern for the social, economic and environmental well-being of small producers and does not maximise profit unfairly

Principle Four: Fair Payment

We charge fair prices for our products. We pay fair wages to our employees. These wages provide a decent standard of living that includes all essential needs: for example housing, food, education, and healthcare

Principle Five:  Ensuring no Child Labour and Forced Labour

The organisation adheres to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and national law on the employment of children.

The organisation ensures that there is no forced labour in its workforce.

Principle Six:  Commitment to Non Discrimination, Gender Equity and Women’s Economic Empowerment, and Freedom of Association

The organisation does not discriminate in hiring, wages, access to training, or promotion, based on any of the following things: race, caste, nationality, religion, disability, gender, sexual orientation, union membership, political affiliation, HIV/AIDS status or age.

The organisation has a clear policy and plan to promote the equality of women.

Principle Seven:  Ensuring Good Working Conditions

The organisation provides a safe and healthy working environment for employees and complies with national laws.

Principle Eight:  Providing Capacity Building

The organisation seeks to make positive developmental impacts for small, producers through Fair Trade.

The organisation develops the skills and capabilities of its own employees or members.

Principle Nine:  Promoting Fair Trade

The organisation provides its buyers, customers and other stakeholders with information about itself, the products it markets and the organisation itself.

Principle Ten: Climate Action and Protection of the Environment

The organisation follows the principles of sustainability, recycling, low waste, and protecting the environment.
